Finland has traditionally had a high level of technological expertise. However, the wait for the “next Nokia” has been in vain, as no similar giant has popped-up lately.
Nevertheless, there are currently several interesting technology startups in Finland. Perhaps the most well-known and largest is Wolt, which has already been sold to foreign ownership. Nightingale and Solar Foods have also gained significant global interest.
Holvi
Holvi is one of the most interesting Finnish fintech companies. Founded in 2011, the company focuses on providing banking services to small businesses, freelancers, and sole entrepreneurs. Holvi’s main market remains Finland, but it also operates in many other European countries.
What sets Holvi apart is that, in addition to banking services, it offers invoicing and accounting through its digital platform. All services are available in one place, making financial management easier for small businesses and providing significant savings.
Enfuce
Founded in 2016, Enfuce is a Finnish fintech company specializing in payment service solutions. It operates similarly to the Swedish payment service Brite but focuses on payment cards instead of direct bank transfers.
Enfuce offers card management solutions that cover everything from card issuance to transaction processing. The company’s solutions cater to the needs of banks, fintech companies, and other payment service providers.
Enfuce’s goal and mission are to expand into a global player. Currently, it operates in several European countries, including its home country, Finland.
Nightingale Health
Founded in 2013, Nightingale Health operates in the healthcare sector, as its name suggests. The company focuses on providing health monitoring and analysis services, with its primary product being a blood analysis that offers a comprehensive overview of an individual’s health status.
Nightingale Health’s health reports provide information on cardiovascular health, metabolism, and potential inflammation in the body. The company utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify health risks and the onset of diseases.
Solar Foods
The biotechnology company Solar Foods is developing a protein for global markets that is produced entirely without traditional agricultural raw materials, such as plants or animals. The microbe-based protein, named Solein, is made using carbon dioxide, water, and renewable energy.
Founded in 2017, Solar Foods has received significant global attention. All its production processes are sustainable, and the company’s protein factory is currently operating in Vantaa.
Iceye
The company perhaps least known to the general public is Iceye, founded in 2014. The company specializes in the manufacturing and operation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites.
Iceye’s mission is to provide accurate and up-to-date information about the Earth’s surface to various industries and organizations.
Over its ten-year history, Iceye has received international attention and funding from many major investors. Iceye has established itself as a key player in the space technology sector.
Wolt
Lastly, let’s add Wolt, a company familiar to all Finns, especially in larger cities. Wolt is one of the biggest Finnish success stories of recent years and eventually sold to the United States.
While Wolt is in a completely different league compared to the other companies on this list, its history is still in its early stages. Wolt already operates globally but continues to strive to expand its network coverage.
The company’s mission is to offer other services beyond food and grocery delivery through its network.
