the power of youth engagement in health policy and governance
In the heart of Geneva, Switzerland, the first in-person Global Model WHO Conference (GMWHO) recently unfolded, a testament to the power of youth and their unwavering dedication to shaping a healthier future for all.
This groundbreaking event, formed from a partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), brought together over 350 high school and university students from over 50 countries. This event marked the first time a UN agency co-hosted a major simulation of its main decision-making body and highlighted the WHO and WFUNA’s shared commitment to fostering the next generation of global citizens and global health leaders.
Global Model WHO is no ordinary Model UN conference – it is the most accurate simulation of the World Health Assembly. GMWHO provides an empowering and enriching experience for delegates by emphasizing consensus-building and multilateralism, and by prioritizing collaboration over competition. During the conference, delegates have the opportunity to learn how WHO truly functions. They are able to interact with WHO staff and other global health experts while honing their skills in negotiation, teamwork, and diplomacy.
This year, 29 October – 1 November, delegates immersed themselves in the intricate world of global health policy, drafting resolutions that addressed six of the most pressing issues of our time: the interplay between climate change, pollution, and health; the mental health crisis amongst today’s youth; the threat of antimicrobial resistance; the eradication of poliomyelitis; the fight against tuberculosis; and the complex relationship between global health and peace.
In addition to the six global health issues being addressed, a select group of participants were chosen to develop the GMWHO Youth Declaration on the Pandemic Agreement. The Youth Declaration underscores the urgent need for global solidarity and a proactive approach to pandemic preparedness. It calls upon all Member States to act urgently and collaboratively in finalizing the Pandemic Agreement and emphasizes the importance of coordinated efforts between all nations, organizations, and individuals to safeguard the health and well-being of future generations. During the GMWHO closing ceremony, the Youth Declaration was proudly adopted by delegates – a joyous moment that was celebrated by all who were present.
Beyond committee sessions, GMWHO’s Global Experience Event provided a platform for celebrating cultural diversity and international camaraderie. Delegates came together to showcase their heritage and share their unique traditions, cuisines, and stories – creating a tapestry of human connection. It was in these moments of cultural exchange that the international spirit of the conference shone brightest.
Throughout the conference, delegates were the voice of youth, carrying the hopes and aspirations of young people worldwide. One could not help but be swept up in the optimism that filled the air as delegates tackled complex global health challenges with remarkable intellect, empathy, and a collaborative spirit. The passion, dedication, and hard work they poured into achieving consensus demonstrated the power of collective action and inspired all who participated in the event. In an exciting turn of events, delegates were also given the opportunity to meet and interact with the WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who commended their dedication to global health and their commitment to advocacy.
GMWHO 2024 was a microcosm of international health diplomacy where delegates forged lasting connections and life-long friendships based on mutual respect and a shared commitment to global health. As delegates returned to their respective corners of the globe, they carried with them not only certificates of participation, but also a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to creating a healthier, more equitable world for all.
GMWHO’s impact extends across continents, impacting lives far beyond the walls of committee rooms. It is more than just a simulation of the World Health Assembly; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to the potential of youth to drive meaningful change. The success of the GMWHO 2024 conference is proof that the future of global health can be bright. Young people are more than just the future of global health; they are essential partners in shaping its present. Their lived experiences, fresh perspectives, and innovative ideas are vital to shaping impactful health policies – both today and tomorrow.
