World WellBeing Week 2025 Spotlights Mental and Emotional

why is health and wellbeing important in the workplace?

World WellBeing Week returns from June 24 to June 30, 2025, marking its fifth year as a global initiative to celebrate the multifaceted aspects of well-being.
This year, the week places a significant emphasis on encouraging organizations worldwide to initiate crucial conversations about mental and emotional health within their workplaces and broader networks. The initiative underscores the growing recognition that well-being, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional health, financial security, and social resilience, is more vital than ever for both individual lives and collective livelihoods.
The recent global challenges have highlighted an unprecedented capacity for adaptation and a newfound resilience, bringing the concept of ‘wellbeing’ to the forefront of public discourse.
The importance of addressing mental health in the workplace cannot be overstated.
Statistics reveal a pressing need for proactive strategies: there were 776,000 reported cases of work-related stress, depression, or anxiety, accounting for 46% of all work-related ill-health cases and 55% of all working days lost due to work-related ill-health.
Key factors contributing to these issues often include:
job demands,
lack of control,
insufficient information and support,
strained work relationships, and unclear roles and responsibilities.
Employers have a legal and ethical duty of care to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of their employees, including mental health. Beyond compliance, fostering a supportive environment for mental well-being yields tangible business benefits, such as increased productivity, reduced sickness and staff turnover, and an enhanced reputation as a positive and safe place to work. Research indicates that, on average, businesses achieve a £5 return for every £1 spent on well-being support.
Organizations are encouraged to actively participate in World WellBeing Week by celebrating their own activities and events, thereby demonstrating appreciation for their employees, customers, partners, and suppliers.
This year’s focus on starting conversations about mental well-being aims to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental ill-health, which is a crucial step towards creating safer and healthier workplace environments.
Resources are available to support organizations in building positive mental health, including guidance on raising awareness, implementing effective interventions, improving understanding, and addressing stigma.
Companies can share their activities throughout the week on social media using the hashtag #worldwellbeingweek, and submit stories to info@wellbeingworld.je for potential feature in WellBeing World magazine.
“World WellBeing Week serves as a powerful reminder that mental and emotional health are foundational to overall well-being, both personally and professionally,” stated a spokesperson for WellBeing World. “This year, we are particularly focused on empowering workplaces to foster open dialogue and implement supportive practices. By prioritizing mental health, organizations not only fulfill their duty of care but also cultivate a more resilient, productive, and compassionate workforce, which benefits everyone.”
Dr. Anya Sharma, a leading expert in organizational psychology, commented,
“The data clearly shows the profound impact of workplace mental health on productivity and employee retention. Initiatives like World WellBeing Week provide a vital platform for businesses to move beyond mere awareness to tangible action.
Investing in mental well-being support is not just a cost; it’s a strategic investment that yields significant returns in human capital and organizational success.”
