Big new hospital, ‘bold’ new health-care plan on the horizon in Mississauga

Mississauga residents are going to benefit from a “new kind of health care” that’s on the horizon in Canada’s seventh-largest city, local health officials say.

Trillium Health Partners, which operates Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in addition to the Queensway Health Centre on the Mississauga-Etobicoke border, recently unveiled its Plan to 2030, which it describes as “a bold strategic roadmap to deliver a new kind of health care for a healthier community.”

THP officials say the plan sets a course for the years ahead that puts an emphasis on “improving quality for better access and outcomes, preventing avoidable hospitalizations and ensuring every person experiences care that reflects who they are, where they are and what matters most.”

Trillium Health Partners president and CEO Karli Farrow said the organization is committed to “building a new kind of health care, defined not by illness, but by the health and well-being of people and communities.

“We envision a future where care is proactive, personalized and digitally enabled — connecting hospital services with primary care, home care, long-term care and community supports to create a more seamless system that follows people through every stage of life.”

Hospital officials note that THP serves one of Canada’s most diverse and rapidly growing communities, “with the demand for health care projected to outpace all other hospitals in Ontario over the next 20 years.”

Add to that the fact Ontarians are also living longer, and with more complex health needs, and the need for a revamped health-care plan to serve Mississauga residents is even greater, the health community says.

By 2040, according to THP, one in four Ontarians over age 30 will require significant hospital care for a serious illness, up from one in eight in 2002.

“Through timely access to specialized treatment and diagnostics, prevention and effective chronic disease management, Trillium Health Partners will improve care, elevate health and strengthen the communities it serves, with more people living longer, healthier lives,” the Mississauga hospital network said in a recent news release.

“Research, innovation and education will also be embedded into every aspect of care, ensuring that discovery is immediately translated into real-world impact, improving prevention, treatment and recovery, and contributing to healthier lives for patients and families.”

A key part of THP’s Plan to 2030, and beyond, hospital officials note, is The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, which when completed and open to patients in 2033 will be the largest hospital in Canada. Expected to be a state-of-the-art health-care centre that rises up on the site of the current Mississauga Hospital, the new hospital will be 2.8 million square feet in size and 22 storeys in height.

Contained within the walls of the new $16-billion (estimated cost) health-care centre will be the 200,000-sq.-ft. Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children. That facility will become Ontario’s first health-care centre to focus exclusively on the well-being of women and children, hospital officials in Mississauga said earlier.

And The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre is also part of THP’s massive expansion plans in the coming years.

“These hospitals will be part of a seamless, digitally connected system of care, strengthened through partnerships, innovative technology and AI,” THP officials say.

The new Mississauga hospital is being built on the same site as the current hospital at Hurontario Street and The Queensway, where it’s been situated since first opening in 1958.
